Bandon Community Health Center

Bandon Community Health Center is a certified Rural Health Center under a program established by Congress as a way to provide primary health care to medically underserved populations in rural America. The center is privately funded by grants and donations and sliding fees. Their sliding fee ranges from $10 to fully insured, so each patient is treated with dignity regardless of ability to pay the bill. They welcome anyone in need.

The professional staff includes a physician with hospital privileges who is trained in family practice, an adult nurse practitioner, and a women and children's nurse practitioner. Future plans are to provide services for men's medical issues, free Pap tests and mammograms for women, and a vaccine program for children.

Despite Bandon's image of being affluent, the area has a high degree of poverty, with 30% of the parents of children ages 5-17 below the poverty threshhold, compared with 24% for Coos County. As of January 2010, 55% of students in Bandon were on free or reduced lunch programs.

The Rev Susan Hazen writes that "St John Episcopal Church was determined to support the goals of BCHC. By supporting the center we are obeying Christ's command to feed the hungry and care for the sick."

The Dean of our South Coast Convocation advised that there was no diocesan charity specific to the South Coast. So, a cause was born. St John's launched the cookbook project, which included recipes from eleven churches and the communities.
